Eczacibasi to begin title defence in European derby

 

Manila, Philippines, October 15, 2016 - Defending world champions Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul of Turkey take on reigning European champions Pomi Casalmaggiore of Italy as the race for the title of the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship heats up in the third match on day one on October 18.

Eczacibasi are competing in only their second Club World Championship, after claiming the title in last year's edition in Zurich. They can become the first ever club to win the world title twice.

Pomi are making their debut appearance as the 7th Italian club in the history of the competition. Teodora Ravenna (competing then as Il Messaggero) are the only Italian club to have won a gold medal at the Club World Championship.

Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul
- Playing their 5th match in the history of the FIVB Club World Championship, after finishing their 2015 appearance on a 3-1 record (and the gold medal).

Pomi Casalmaggiore
- Making their debut appearance at the FIVB Club World Championship.

- Reigning European champions have won the world title in the last three seasons (VakifBank Istanbul in 2013, Dinamo Kazan in 2014 and Eczacibasi Istanbul in 2015).
