The 2016 edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship will take place in Manila, the Philippines from October 18 to 23
Manila, Philippines, October 12, 2016 - Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte declared October 2016 "Volleyball Month" on Tuesday, a day after the players and coaches of FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship hosts PSL-F2 Logistics Manila met members of the Philippine Senate in the country's capital.
As eight of the best club teams in the world prepare to compete in Manila from October 18 to 23, the Presidential Proclamation declaring October 2016 "Volleyball Month" said it was "desirable to focus national attention on the event and stimulate greater awareness and involvement of all sectors of Philippine society in the aforesaid sport."
Volleyball is the only sport that has received a Presidential Proclamation twice. The first proclamation was made when the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, Asian Women’s Junior Championship and the Southeast Asian Youth Championship were held in August 1994 in the Philippines.
“We are all honoured by the support of our President to consider volleyball and the Women’s Club World Championship of national importance,” Philippine Superliga President Ramon Suzara said. “We are privileged to gain this support, as this kind of recognition is usually accorded to multi-sport events.”
The PSL-F2 Logistics Manila squad also made a courtesy visit to the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon. The players got a warm welcome from the members of the Congress, demonstrating the full support of the Philippine government for the event.
“We are just overwhelmed by the support of the government not just for our team but also for the Women’s Club World Championship,” PSL-F2 Logistics opposite Jovelyn Gonzaga said. “We are inspired to play and we hope we can send this positive vibe to all Filipino volleyball athletes. We also hope that our supporters will be there with us at the Mall of Asia Arena when we play our very first FIVB match.”
The 2016 edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship will feature hosts PSL-F2 Logistics Manila, 2016 European club champions Pomì Casalmaggiore of Italy, 2015 Asian Champions Bangkok Glass of Thailand, 2016 South American champions Rexona-Sesc Rio or Brazil, Volero Zurich of Switzerland, Hisamitsu Springs of Japan, while Turkey will be represented by two teams in Eczacıbaşı VitrA Istanbul, who are the reigning world club champions, and Vakıfbank İstanbul.
