Pomi crash past Volero for ticket to Club Worlds final

Pomi Casalmaggiore celebrate win over Volero Zurich that sees them through to the final of the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship in Manila.

Manila, Philippines, October 22, 2016 - Pomi Casalmaggiore pulled off a stunning 3-1 (25-27 25-23, 25-17, 25-23) victory over erstwhile unbeaten Volero Zurich to snag the last ticket to the final of the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The reigning European champions thus set up a showdown against defending champion Eczasibasi VitrA Istanbul for Sunday's final.

Volero went all out in the first set and appeared to be in the groove with Foluke Akinradewo and Olesia Rykhliuk scoring through Pomi's blockers. The Swiss side still had to cancel two set points of Pomi before taking advantage of an attack gone long by Samanta Fabris and kill by Foluke Akinradewo to bring it home.

But Pomi's teamwork held up and the Italian side turned the game around with two solid and very convincing sets.

It was a close call in the fourth, as Volero came from behind to take a late 21-23 lead, before Lauren Gibbemeyer and Jovana Stevanovic scored to equalise and Pomi went on to snatch the game out of Volero's hands on a couple of unforced errors.

Pomi had 54 attacks while Volero punched in 50, and made more blocks, 12-9, and aces, 7-5.

Fabris topscored with 23 points, helped up by Lucia Bosetti who chipped in 16 markers. Rykhliuk and Akinradewo scored 19 each for Volero.
