Rexona-Sesc rout PSL-F2 Logistics, Ana Carolina sets block record

Rexona-Sesc Rio celebrate as they trounced hosts PSL-F2 Logistics Manila in the fourth and last match of opening day of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship in Manila, Philippines

Manila, Philippines, October 18, 2016 - Rexona-Sesc Rio taught hosts PSL-F2 Logistics Manila a neat lesson by scoring a methodical 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20) win in the fourth and last match of the opening day of the 2016 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday.

Olympians Gabriela Braga Guimaraes (Gabi), Juicely Barreto and two-time Olympic gold medallist Fabiana Oliveira refused to get bothered by the highly partisan crowd cheering for the Filipino players who were seeing action for the first time in a big stage.

Very quickly, Rexona-Sesc Rio claimed the first two sets with authority, while Filipino members of the PSL-F2 Logistics Manila made career milestones by getting into the scoring column.

Rexona-Sesc Rio, the 11-time champion of the Brazilian league, relaxed a bit in the third, allowing the host club to erect a 14-7 lead. But that was all there is to it as it launched successive attacks while going back in defence.

The Brazilian club had 15 blocks compared to the host’s four, and issued nine aces as against two by PSL-F2 Logistics. But the teams tied in attacks, 35-all.

Ana Carolina Da Silva made 10 of Rexona’s 15 blocks, while Alyja Daphne Santiago accounted for two of PSL-F2 Logistics Manila’s four.

It was balanced scoring for Brazil with Anne Buijs and Ana Carolina each scoring 13 points, while Gabi and Monique Marinho Pavao making 11 and 10 points, respectively.
