VakifBank add bronze to Club Worlds medals collection

VakifBank Istanbul celebrate the bronze medal of the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship after defeating Volero Zurich in Manila.

Manila, Philippines, October 23, 2016 - VakifBank Istanbul wore down Volero Zurich with sheer handwork to prevail 3-0 (25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-11) and run away with the bronze medal of the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

It was the third medal for the Turkish side, who had won the gold in 2013 after having finished second in 2011.

VakifBank put up a formidable defensive shield and won 19 points on blocks against Volero's 6.

Vakifbank also launched 47 kills against 39 by Volero. The Turkish club had four players scoring in double digits.

Lonneke Sloetjes topscored with 16 points, while Milena Rasic accounted for 15 markers for Vakifbank who also got 13 and 11 points from Zhu Ting and Gozde Kirdar, respectively.

Volero, who had previously swept the Group stage, got big numbers from Dobriana Radadzhieva who had 10 and Foluke Akinradewo who had 10.

But the efforts didn’t help the Zurich club as it settled for fourth place in the tournament - their third fourth-place finish in the last four year, after clinching the bronze medal last season at home in the Swiss city.
