Sm’Aesch Pfeffingen were poised to challenge Volero Zürich and last season's runners-up played on equal terms with Volero in the opening set. The team from the suburbs of Basel kept the game tight until the end of the set, but eventually fell to Volero 24-26.

“We were struggling in the very beginning of the game. I think we got a little bit nervous as it was our first official game of the season with the whole squad. Thereafter, however, we found our rhythm and calmed down. I think this was mentally very important,” Volero libero Silvija Popovic said after the game.

Volero Zürich improved in the second set. The Swiss champions put their foot to the floor and dominated the match with their block with Sm’Aesch Pfeffingen struggling to keep pace.

As a consequence, Volero Zürich prevailed 25-15 in the second set and 25-21 in the third to claim the 2016 Indoor Sports Supercup.

Popovic added: “I think the Supercup was most of all important as our last rehearsal for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship in Manila. That’s the reason why a victory was so important to us – also mentally. Now we have to keep on working hard in order to be ready for Manila.”
