Based in the town of Casalmaggiore, on the north bank of the River Po, Volleyball Casalmagiore was founded in 2008. The team made their way up from the B2 Division of the Italian League to first play in the A1 Division in the 2013-14 season.
Featuring a host of international stars from Europe and North America, Pomi Casalmaggiore won the domestic title in Italy in 2014-15 and earned the right to play in the European Champions League in the following season.
Pomi Casalmaggiore hosted the Final Four of the 2015-16 Champions League in neighbouring Montichiari and scored straight-set wins over Russia’s Dinamo Kazan in the semifinals and Turkey’s VakifBank Istanbul in the final to claim the title, with their star player Francesca Picinini picking up the MVP award.
Domestically in the 2015-16 season, after finishing second to Imoco Conegliano in the Regular Season, Pomi Casalmaggiore were knocked out by Foppapedretti Bergamo in the Playoffs quarterfinals.
This is their first appearance in an FIVB Volleyball Club World Championship. They become the seventh team to represent Italy in the history of the competition.
Players to look out for in the Casalmaggiore roster include US national player Carli Lloyd, a bronze medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympics, Serbian international Jovana Stevanovic, who claimed a historic silver medal at Rio 2016, and former Italian national player Lucia Bosetti.
